Today we celebrate Harmony Day in Australia.
But do you know why we celebrate Harmony day and what it means?
Here are some historical facts for you:
#harmonyday is a national celebration in Australia that was first introduced in Western Australia in 1999. Harmony Day was initially conceived by the Government of #westernaustralia in response to growing concerns about racism and social division within the state.
The first Harmony Day was celebrated on 21st March 1999, in Perth, with the theme "Everyone Belongs". It was a day to promote the importance of inclusivity, mutual respect, and understanding in the community and to celebrate the diversity of cultures that make up Australian society.
In 2003, Harmony Day became a national event, celebrated nationwide on the 21st of March each year. The date was chosen to coincide with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, also celebrated on 21st March.
Today, Harmony Day is celebrated by Australians of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds. This is an important reminder of the values that underpin our society: fairness, respect, and inclusivity. It is a time to reflect on our shared history, celebrate our cultural diversity, and work together to build a more unified and inclusive nation.
Our celebrations are an opportunity to learn from each other, celebrate our differences, and discover the many things we have in common. It is also a daily opportunity to build a more harmonious and inclusive community together for a brighter future for all of us!
So, do your part in contributing to a more harmonious, inclusive and respectful Australia and the world!
Happy Harmony Day, Australia 🇦🇺
